FAMILY SYSTEMS SERVICE

Family Systems Services provides intensive in-home services to families with the goal of coordinating multidisciplinary services in the community to alleviate and/or prevent abuse and neglect risk factors.  These services are sponsored by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).  Family Systems Services consist of three different programs, Family Preservation Program, Alternate Response and Child Abuse Prevention Intervention and Treatment (C.A.P.I.T.).

Family Preservation Program

Valley Trauma Center's Family Preservation Program is designed to protect children by strengthening and preserving families whose children are at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

Families enrolled in the Family Preservation Program are first referred by the Department of Children and Family Services and the Los Angeles County Probation Department. Families then engage in a process of self-discovery and education that empowers individual family members to identify and resolve problems early and safely.

  Family Preservation Services:

  • 24-Hour Relationship and/or Sexual Assault Crisis Response

  • Multi-disciplinary case planning with dynamic, goal-oriented family involvement in plan design and implementation

  • Mentoring

  • Parenting Training

  • Family Specific referrals for education, job training, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, housing and employment      assistance, and health care

  • Community Advisory Councils to ensure high quality service provision

  • In-home counseling to improve family dynamics and behaviors

  Alternate Response

This program provides services to families reported to DCFS for which allegations of abuse or neglect are unsubstantiated or inconclusive and the Childrens Social Worker (CSW) has assessed that child safety will be enhanced by involving the family in this service.  Alternate Response Services has a duration of three months and includes in-home counseling, individual counseling, parenting, and family specific referrals in effort to help the family meet their goals in keeping their children safe.

Family Preservation Program and Alternate Response Goals:

  • Ensure the safety of children

  • Provide a healthy, positive alternative to removing at-risk youth from the family

  • Empower families to resolve problems early, positively, and peacefully

  • Engage the community in support of at-risk families

  • Strengthen family bonds

Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Intervention and Treatment (C.A.P.I.T.)

CAPIT services consist of individual, family, and group counseling, in-home services, case management services, parenting education and support groups. There is a 24-hour telephone availability to agencys clients.  These cases are referred through various community agencies such as DCFS and Valley Trauma Centers Sexual Assault Response Team (S.A.R.T.) and the community itself.

C.A.P.I.T. Goals:

  • promote child safety

  • empower families

  • identify at risk families

  • building skills and techniques in parenting

Persons served must reside in the Third Supervisorial District of the County of Los Angeles and present problems with:
  • substance abuse
  • infants and preschool children at risk of abuse
  • children exposed to domestic violence
  • troubled adolescents
  • pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children
  • children with chronically mentally ill parents
